Hong Kong stock agricultural sector rises against trend; practical analyst interprets stock selection strategy

Hong Kong, July 28, 2026 — Against the backdrop of global inflationary pressures and geopolitical uncertainties, the Hang Seng Index has been fluctuating recently. However, the agricultural sector has shown strong resilience, rising over 2% overall on July 28, with WH Group (0288.HK) up 3.5% and COFCO Joycome (1610.HK) up 4.2%, becoming market highlights. The Agricultural Stock Information Network's Hong Kong Stock Practical Camp invited seasoned analyst Chen Zhiqiang to deeply analyze investment opportunities and practical strategies for the current Hong Kong stock agricultural sector from three dimensions: fundamentals, technicals, and risk control.

Policy dividends combined with supply-demand gap bring structural opportunities for agricultural sector

Chen Zhiqiang pointed out that the counter-trend rise of agricultural stocks is not accidental. Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on July 25 showed that the national pig herd inventory in the first half of 2026 decreased by 5.3% year-on-year, and pork prices rose 18.7% year-on-year, directly benefiting breeding enterprises. At the same time, the central government recently added 20 billion yuan in subsidies to major grain-producing areas and optimized import tariff quotas for agricultural products. Domestic seed leader Longping High-Tech (related A-share) has initiated its Hong Kong listing process. In the Hong Kong stock market, the scarcity of agricultural stock targets is further highlighted: WH Group, as the world's largest pork food company, benefits from domestic consumption recovery through its subsidiary Shuanghui Development; COFCO Joycome, with its full industry chain layout, shows significant profit elasticity during the feed cost downcycle.

"Agriculture is a typical policy-driven sector. The 2026 No. 1 Central Document clearly states 'Party and government shared responsibility for food security.' Combined with the traditional peak consumption season in the second half of the year, the agricultural sector is expected to see valuation repair," Chen added.

Technical practical tips: Application of volume-price relationship and MACD indicator

In stock selection, Chen shared two proven practical techniques. First is the volume-price anomaly screening method: focus on stocks with daily trading volume more than 3 times the 5-day average and closing price breaking above the 20-day moving average. For example, COFCO Joycome saw continuous volume expansion from July 24 to 28, with volume surging from an average of 15 million shares to 50 million shares, and the MACD indicator forming a golden cross above the zero axis, typical of a breakout buy signal. Investors can set a 3% stop-loss level; exit if the stock price falls back below the 20-day moving average.

Second is the box breakout strategy: WH Group's stock price oscillated in the HK$5.8-6.5 range since March 2026, and on July 28 it broke above the box top of HK$6.5 with volume doubling the average volume during the box period. In practice, buy after confirmation (close above HK$6.5), target previous high of HK$7.2, stop-loss at HK$6.2 (box bottom). Chen emphasized: "The box breakout strategy has a win rate of about 65%, but must be verified with volume; breakouts without volume are mostly false."

Risk control: Position management and use of hedging tools

The Hong Kong stock market is highly volatile, and risk control is one of the core courses of the Practical Camp. Chen suggested that agricultural stock positions should be controlled within 15% of total funds. Three major risk points to watch recently: first, global commodity prices falling may lower breeding costs less than expected; second, recurrence of swine fever could trigger stock price crashes; third, if the Hang Seng Index breaks below the 27,000-point level, systemic risk may drag the sector.

"In practice, a 'stock + option' combination strategy can reduce downside risk," he said. For example, holding 100 lots of WH Group, one could simultaneously buy put options with a strike price of HK$6.2 (option premium about HK$0.3 per share). If the stock falls below HK$6.2, option profits partially offset stock losses, capping maximum loss at about HK$0.8 per share. The breakeven point for this combination is HK$6.8, requiring only a 3% rise from the purchase price to be profitable.

Industry outlook and practical advice

Looking ahead to the second half of the year, Chen believes three catalysts remain for the agricultural sector: first, around September, the central government may launch a new round of frozen pork reserve purchases; second, COFCO Joycome's 500,000-head pig breeding base in Sichuan is about to commence production, with capacity release likely boosting EPS; third, southbound Stock Connect funds continue to flow in, increasing demand for undervalued agricultural stocks. However, operationally, the principle of "trend is king" should be followed. Before the index stabilizes or breaks key levels, focus on short-term trading and avoid heavy chasing.
